As a faculty member of fashion design in Pune with many years of experience, I have had the opportunity to work with many students in our BSc in Fashion Design program. Over my tenure, I have seen what it takes for a student to succeed as opposed to which elements cause struggle. The field of fashion is dynamic, competitive and ever changing but with the right approach, strategies and resources you can do very well in that creative environment.
I will present you with practical tips which will help you in your Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design program also at the same time we will look at how institutions like Suryadatta Institute of Fashion Technology (SIFT) are to blame for developing the next generation of designers.
Why do I want to be a fashion designer? I may be into fabrics, I may be into how culture shapes what we wear, I may also have a go at creating sustainable fashion, but what is clear is that out of these my passion is what will see me through hard times. In my experience at SIFT, what I have found is that those which students do well are those that approach their education beyond just a degree issue. They see it as a platform for their dream career. Also, we found that in fashion design programs which do require long hours, performance under stress, and constant growth if you are dedicated these issues present themselves as growth opportunities.
In my experience I see that which we as new students do is to focus on trends at the expense of basic skills. While it is of great value to be aware of what is going on the runway, what also is very fundamental is your knowledge of how garments are constructed, what fabrics are like, color theory, and pattern making. These foundations are the base of any good design. At SIFT we present a practical approach in our workshops which is very hands-on in nature. We take students from the basic draping techniques through to the complex issue of sewing in fine detail.
For example, it is in the understanding of how fabrics react that we see great designs born from the silken which flow so freely to the denims which hold their structure. Put in the work to master these bases because they will be the foundation of your success throughout your career. In a report put out by the National Education Policy we are told that skill-based learning is key to success in creative fields. By which we mean that you do well academically and improve your chance at getting internships and jobs post-graduation.
Fashion is a product of culture, history, and technology. To distinguish yourself as a designer, go beyond what is taught in the classroom and do your own research. Look into issues like sustainable fashion, global textile traditions, and emerging tech such as 3D printing in apparel. Pro tip: Follow in the reports of Vogue Business, WGSN (which is a trend forecasting platform), and journals put out by the Textile Association of India to keep up with industry news.
Theorizing is a base but in practice that is where we see true growth. At SIFT we have a curriculum which includes a lot of assignments, live projects, and we also team up with local artisans and brands. In the process, students learn a great deal about teamwork, client communication, and about hitting deadlines.
For instance, last year we had our 2nd year students work with a local Pune based boutique which designed a capsule collection out of which was inspired by Maharashtrian culture. Also, that project gave them real world experience and at the same time helped them to build professional networks. In your program look out for such opportunities that may include presenting at fashion shows, competing in design contests, or interning with professional designers.
Building your professional network is the basis of success in fashion. Attend what your school as well as outside groups put on for these are great opportunities. Engage our alumni, guest lecturers and industry experts that come to our campus. Networking, which in turn will open those doors to mentorship, internships, and job offers.
At SIFT we present a stage for our interaction with top designers and entrepreneurs from Pune and outside. We had a session with a large-scale sustainable fashion advocate which in turn inspired many students to get into the field of ethical fashion. You should take advantage of such forums which put you in touch with mentors for your growth.
The fashion world is very fast paced, and to stay relevant you must constantly learn. We also see value in subscribing to fashion magazines, following influencers on social media, and analyzing market trends. Also note that by understanding what the consumer wants and needs you will be able to put out designs which in turn will do well with your target audience.
For example, out of McKinsey’s State of Fashion 2023 report which reports that sustainability is the top issue for customers worldwide. We see that by including ecofriendly elements in your design, you may stand out in academic and professional settings.
Every designer which achieves success has their own design language or philosophy which they are known for. What is it that makes your point of view unique. Do you lean towards minimalism, maximalism or a balance of both in your design? While in school, try out many styles to find your voice.
I often tell my students: In your portfolio, I present a story. Upon review of your work by recruiters and clients, which will include your design, we see the thorough development of your design voice. This is a result of continuous study and improvement over time.
While creativity is the life force of fashion, business sense is what makes it sustainable. Study up on marketing, branding and finance which will in turn better equip you to handle the business end of things in fashion. Many designers would ignore this element, which is very important for the success of your label or for you to do well in a corporate setting.
At SIFT what we do is incorporate business modules into our curriculum which in turn prepares you for running your own business. From price strategy to digital marketing, we cover it all which in turn gives you the tools to take your creative ideas to market and make them profitable.
Constructive critique is very much an asset in fashion design. Do not be shy to turn to your professors, peers, and mentors for feedback. Use what they have to say to improve your work and grow as a designer. Iteration is an element of the creative process which you must embrace; it will, in turn, make you more resilient.
Also don't let the program take over. Fashion design is very intense, but burning out is not the solution. Take care of yourself, manage your time well, and celebrate the small wins along the way.
